Usability : ten weblog design mistakes to avoid
Another fine study on useit.com : Weblog Usability or 10 mistakes you must avoid with your blog. This quick checklist is a must read for your own audit about your weblog usability and readability.
- No Author Biographies
Tell your readers a bit who you are, what you like … - No Author Photo
… and what you look like. Helps create relationship and credibility. - Nondescript Posting Titles
Seduce in 10 words or suffer the “Is this article going to interest me ? Who knows… I’ll skip it.” syndrom. - Links Don’t Say Where They Go
Outside link ? Inside navigation ? Downloading a .pdf ? - Classic Hits are Buried
Wrote a really good article ? Highlight it on your front page, don’t let it disappear deep down in your archives. - The Calendar is the Only Navigation
Give visitors the ability of reading related articles, for instance. Help them crawl your site. - Irregular Publishing Frequency
Regular posting is good for readership and for search engines. - Mixing Topics
It obviously helps building readership if you stick to a topic. - Forgetting That You Write for Your Future Boss
Never forget that what you write one day could be used in 5 or 10 years. For, or against you. - Having a Domain Name Owned by a Weblog Service
A subdomain of blogspot.com is like an email @aol.com : not credible.
All in all, I’m pretty satisfied about my own blog usability regarding this checklist. I particularly paid attention to internal navigation and linking, and from what I can see through visitor logs, it does really pay. (via Randy)
